World’s largest semiconductor manufacturer is still named Intel and the processor giant has a safe lead with a 13.1 % market share, says iSuppli. Arch rival AMD on the other hand has lost ground. AMD has been going through some rough years and this is clearly seen in the sales, AMD has lost another two places since last year when it was ranked 10. With a 2.1 percent market share it is now found on 12th place. AMD dropped 7.8% in revenue from 2007 to 2008, but then again most companies on the list showed red numbers.



In fact, even Intel reported a poorer 2008 than 2007, but only down by 0.7%. Eight of the top ten companies presented a lower revenue for 2008 than 2007, the company that went up was STMicroelectronics (up by 3.3%) ranked fifth and Qualcomm (up by 15.3%) ranked eighth. Both companies increased revenues spawns from acquisitions.


Memory manufacturer Hynix presented the worst numbers and dropped from third to ninth place with a revenue that had dropped by 33.4% year-to-year.
