AMD launched its new AM3 processors without matching the top model of the Socket AM2+ platform, Phenom II X4 940. So far we’ve only seen one quad-core AM3 processor, Phenom II X4 810, which doesn’t quite keep up with the fastest from the AM2+ assortment. AMD has some new models coming though and it looks like the coming flagship might be ready for launch. Some overclocking results with the coming processor has appeared and they show that the stock frequency of 3.2GHz is far from as high as it goes.

AMD is said to have trashed Phenom II X4 950 for this very reason. It felt that there was more to get than 3.1GHz and the first overclocking results does point to that AMD did the right thing. The processor has been pushed to 4GHz with regular air cooler (Thermaltake Big Typhoon) and now we’re awaiting some more extreme overclocking attempts.

Phenom II X4 955 (?) overclocked to 4GHz

Even if AMD hasn’t revealed anything on a possible Phenom II X4 955 processor but it certainly sounds possible that it would tweak its AM3 series with a processor like this one. Whether it will be called X4 955 and if it will work at 3.2GHz fed 1.25V like the engineering sample overclocker Dumo has gotten his hands on is something we will have to wait and see.
