A while ago we reported about how Eran Badit over at NGOHQ.com had been working with the CUDA SDK and PhysX SDK to find a way to run PhysX on his ATI Radeon graphics cards. He was eventually able to make it happen, but the lack of a last generation Radeon card hindered his efforts. Many have joined in and applied to be beta testers, and he has gained the support from other media, mainly to get him a Radeon HD 4800 series card.
According to his latest status report he is getting pretty close now and the CUDA Radeon library is nearing completion. What struck us though, was that NVIDIA has stepped up to join in on this project. A company he has had some conflicts with in the past regarding modded drivers. He has now been offered to join the NVIDIA developers program and even direct help from NVIDIA. We’re still waiting for a reply from AMD regarding this. We’re not sure where it stands right now.
He expects to get a Radeon HD 4800 card in his possession soon, but he needs the support from AMD to get the PhysX working on the driver level. PhysX on Radeon would certainly help NVIDIA in getting a wider acceptance for PhysX, but AMD announced that it would do physics together with Havok, and Intel indirectly, a while back instead. We will have to wait and see how this evolves.
