Small preview image

AMD has just launched its first B3-stepped processors and its Phenom X4 9850 has four processor cores operating at 2.5GHz, which makes it the flagship of the AMD quad-core lineup. Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q9300 processor is quite similar to AMD’s flagship product; four processor cores and an operating frequency of 2.5GHz. It’s almost like someone is begging you to compare the two, but do keep in mind that AMD’s new Phenom model, even though it is the flagship product, is considerably cheaper than the Intel model. Phenom X4 9850 costs $240, while Core 2 Quad Q9300 will cost you $290.

Over at ExtremeTech they’ve tested the two and the result is pretty much reflected by the prices, as Intel takes command from the very start and just keeps going. Even if AMD’s B3 stepping is a big step up, there is still a lot to do before it can play with the big boys.
