AMD has three different single-GPU cards in the Radeon HD 4800 series. Radeon HD 4870 is the flagship, followed by Radeon HD 4850 and last the entry model known as Radeon HD 4830. When we read, what was said to be, the first review of AMD’s coming RV740 graphics circuit it was pretty easy to picture that the new 40nm circuit could potentially harm AMD’s own lineup. RV740 would be priced around $100, but still sport performance that was sometimes on par with Radeon HD 4850, while entry model 4830 was left behind.
The news we have been expecting has now posted elsewhere, and we agree, and it says that Radeon HD 4830 will soon be phased out, and that AMD partners is unwilling to buy more RV770LE chips, since the chip will disappear with the launch of RV740 in April.
Radeon HD 4830 has been true to AMD’s complete focus on price/performance during its relatively short lifespan. Radeon HD 4830 can be found for around $100 and if partners starts to put the cards on sale the prices could be become real interesting, but if nothing else RV740 looks to be a more then worthy replacement.
