AMD has had big problems with the supply of its Athlon 64 X2 processors and even if AMD could consider it a pretty pleasant problem, system builders are not quite as happy about the shortage. Even if AMD is responsible it’s the processor manufacturer’s new partner Dell that gets the blame. Simply, as it’s the world’s largest computer builder Dell uses tons of components and it is hardly a bold guess that AMD has offered Dell a very beneficial deal when it comes to price and availability of its processors. Dell simply gets most of the processors AMD makes and other builders are left out in the cold.

“I’m being treated like the red-headed stepchild. Intel was always a company for the big guys, and AMD was always a company for the small guys like us,” Coffield added. “The channel made AMD. Now they’re at the dance with Dell, and they’ve thrown us to the wolves.”

The problems with poor availability started according to other partners already at the end of June and that it is causing them big economical damage. How AMD is suppose to solve this remains to be seen, but no price cuts in the world can make AMD gain market shares if there are no processors to sell.
